Before leaving for spring break, state leaders announced a bipartisan effort to improve Alabama’s workforce participation rate. Affordable child care and transportation create barriers for some, but relief could be on the way. A seven-bill package called Working for Alabama includes incentives for businesses to add on-site child care and tax credits for families. “A mother that works in any manufacturer in the state of Alabama that qualify her for this particular credit will be able to receive up to $2,000 either in their check or reimbursement directly to the child care provider,” said Rep. Anthony Daniels. It also includes a grant to help students with dual enrollment classes and a pathway to the workforce for students who don’t plan to attend college. “They’re going to spend less time in the classroom more time learning a trade,” said Lt. Gov. Will Ainsworth.Another big talker this session is gambling. In her State of the State address, Gov. Kay Ivey said she wanted voters to have a say. “Crack down on illegal gambling, and it will responsibly regulate limited forms of legal gaming, including a statewide lottery,” said Ivey. Right now, lawmakers are split. The House is in favor of allowing sports betting and casinos with table games, while the Senate got rid of sports betting and put limits on the number of casinos.Any possible gambling changes would need to be approved by a majority of state lawmakers and Alabama voters.Copyright 2024 WSFA.
