Foreign Minister Penny Wong says the Indo-Pacific needs to work collectively to manage relations between the US and China.
Already a subscriber?Foreign Minister Penny Wong will issue a rallying cry to the Indo-Pacific to embrace a united front to managing relations with the United States and China, playing a collective role to defuse tensions and avert a devastating conflict between the two superpowers.
“But the way we manage our interests in the face of challenges involving great powers is only partly through direct dealing. Much of the answer lies in approaching these challenges in regional terms.“There is a lot that happens in the thousands of kilometres between Australia, the United States and China, just as there is a lot that happens in the broader Indo-Pacific.
Describing Australia as an “important power”, Senator Wong also identifies Indonesia as a crucial building block in this regional response to US-China competition. Senator Wong will release new data that shows deeper business ties with South-East Asia have begun paying dividends, in the wake of former Macquarie Bank chief Nicholas Moore’s landmark economic strategy.
“We need to turn this around. Nobody today could claim they don’t understand the risk of putting too many eggs in one market.”.“This is the biggest growing market in the world. It’s on our doorstep, and so we should be investing there,” Ms Wikramanayake said.
