The collision of the Chinese and Philippine coast guard vessels was the fifth in a month, as tensions escalate between the two nations in the vital waterway.
| The United States and Australia have condemned China’s “dangerous” and “destabilising behaviour” against the Philippines in the South China Sea, after their coast guard vessels rammed in the vital waterway, the latest in an escalating series of clashes.
Australia’s ambassador to the Philippines, Hae Kyong Yu, said China’s actions were unacceptable, adding that “all countries must comply with international law”. China is rapidly expanding its military and has become increasingly assertive in pursuing its claim to virtually the entire South China Sea, where $US3 trillion worth of trade passes annually. The waterway is also believed to be rich in oil and natural gas deposits, as well as fish stocks.
Liu Dejun, a spokesperson for China’s coast guard, said in a statement a Philippine ship, “illegally stranded” at the shoal, had lifted anchor and “deliberately rammed” a Chinese vessel. He called on the Philippines to withdraw immediately or bear the consequences.
