SAN ANTONIO - New information about a mother who abandoned her newborn baby near the Salado Creek Greenway this week.

We verified through Bexar County documents that Alexander was diagnosed in 2021 with schizophrenia and depression. It also states she has a cognitive functioning level equivalent to that of a 10-year-old.Her court-appointed attorney at the time was aware and referred her to a psychiatric provider. Clinical administrator for the Center for Health Care Services, Annie Cortez, told us back in August people like Alexander are supposed to be identified and kept out of the Bexar County jail.RELATED |It recently received 700 thousand dollars to expand the program to people on the maximum security list and women.

When we asked the Bexar County district attorney's office for an interview. They said they couldn't comment on Alexander's specific case, but said in cases involving mental health concerns competency evaluations are sometimes a necessary step, and referrals for treatment are made when appropriate.
