The 68-year-old homeowner was killed in the fire in North Wildwood on Thursday.
Joanne Nessen died of “possible asphyxia” — lack of oxygen, the Cape May County Prosecutor’s Office said.
The fire broke out at the 1½-story home on the 2200 block of New York Avenue shortly before 4:15 p.m., the North Wildwood Fire Department said. Firefighters found Nessen in a rear bedroom of the home and removed her through a side window. She was taken to an area hospital where she died less than an hour later, officials said.Multiple area fire departments assisted the North Wildwood Fire Department in extinguishing the blaze.
