A woman in the US sought to get high by injecting ground-up black widow spider venom, leading to severe muscle cramps, breathing difficulties, and a stay in the ICU. Doctors treated her with calcium gluconate, morphine, and steroids but avoided antivenom due to her pre-existing asthma and risk of anaphylaxis.

Antivenin, or antivenom, for black widow bites carries a risk of anaphylaxis, a severe and immediate allergic reaction.
