When the announcer said the name of the New England Patriots’ first-round draft pick, the silence in the heart of Las Vegas’ strip where the draft took place was absolute. Even the athlete, Cole Strange, an offensive lineman from the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga, seemed stunned.
This year, the land of prognostication missed a little heavy weather floating in from the Northeast as the New England Patriots used their prized first-round pick to draft a guard from Chattanooga named Cole Strange, a player most experts ranked as a second- or third-round pick. The team’s second pick was an underweight receiver named Tyquan Thornton, and their third-round pick was for the 5-foot-8-inch cornerback Marcus Jones.
The answer to that is “yes,” but we shouldn’t be too quick to judge the talent acquisition know-how of he who wears six Super Bowl rings on his fingers. Love him or otherwise, Belichick has figured out at least one important lesson about talent acquisition: do. Too often it feels as though we believe what the world has to say about us or our organizations as though they, and not we, are the experts on where we excel or need improvement.
