The North East Independent School District board voted 6-1 Monday to replace six members...

Among those replaced were the SHAC chair, Kelly Lepeska, a PTA and band mom at Reagan High School who represents Hilliard’s single-district on the panel and was among the three members he ousted. The committee has been riddled with vacancies and the board has no set policy on how many parents and other community representatives should serve on it beyond the state-required minimum of five. Fifty members were appointed last year, including district staff, but only 35 remained by mid-October.

The motion that replaced six community members also added several others to the panel and removed seven out of 14 district staff members. The SHAC will have to decide on a new chair and reorganize its subcommittees, which canceled meetings they had scheduled for Wednesday. Grona said she agreed with Villarreal that community members on the SHAC should live in the districts they represent. As it has in previous meetings, the argument turned to how well the SHAC represents community values.
