The Dothan Houston County Library hosted an Eclipse Viewing Party on Monday for this celestial event.DOTHAN, Ala. - The Dothan Houston County Library hosted an Eclipse Viewing Party for the Great North American Eclipse on Monday, and it’s safe to say they had quite the turnout.
“This is huge, I expected maybe a dozen people,” Ashley Bynum, the adult programming specialist at the library, said. While Alabama did not experience the full effect of a solar eclipse, that did not stop people from getting in on the fun. “I am a science nerd, so I am thrilled that people want to come out and see this happen. Next time I will be better prepared,” Bynum said.“In total, we have given out almost a thousand,” Ashley said. But for spectator Sandy Armstrong, it didn’t matter because she had her own way of watching the eclipse.Sandy spent 33 years teaching science. Before glasses were created for the eclipse, she used index cards with a small hole in the center to safely view the sun. ”I used to do this with my students when we were counting sunspots. It is a great way of being able to see this without a telescope or glasses if you don’t have them,” Armstrong said. When asked what excites her about the eclipse, Armstrong said, “Well, you are not going to see another eclipse for another 20 years and I don’t think I will see the next one. The earth is a very dynamic place and we have examples of this all the time. I taught earth science all the time and I loved every minute of it.”
