Chicago ans brace for another round of winter weather this weekend as a mix of snow, rain, sleet, and ice is expected to hit the area. A spokesperson for Northwestern Medicine reported a surge in patients at suburban hospitals due to slips and falls on icy surfaces. Friday will be a relatively dry day with temperatures in the upper 20s to low 30s and calmer winds.
However, showers are expected to develop in southern Illinois overnight Friday, transitioning to snow in northern parts of the state. This puts northeastern Illinois right in the middle of the wintry mix, with a possibility of freezing rain and sleet starting Saturday morning. The system is expected to hit around 9 a.m., bringing with it periods of freezing rain and light snow, potentially transitioning into an icy mixture by late morning and early afternoon. The National Weather Service warns that at least a glaze of ice and some spotty snow accumulations of less than half an inch are possible, creating slippery travel and walking conditions. By 1 p.m., the system is expected to move into Indiana and Ohio, but lingering snow may continue in Illinois throughout Saturday evening. Temperatures will reach a high of 34 degrees on Saturday, followed by a chillier Sunday in the low 30s.
