DOTHAN, Ala. - The Wiregrass area is preparing for a historic winter weather event this week. The National Weather Service in Tallahassee has issued a Winter Storm Warning for all counties in the coverage area, beginning Tuesday afternoon. The warning states that the incoming storm is expected to bring heavy mixed precipitation, including snow and ice accumulation. The WTVY First Alert Weather Team predicts snowfall amounts could range from 1 to 4 inches across the Wiregrass.
The NWS advises anyone who must travel to prepare for potentially impassable conditions. They recommend keeping an emergency flashlight, food, and water in their vehicles and checking road conditions by calling 511 for the latest updates. The Winter Storm Warning, affecting most of southeast Alabama, the Florida Panhandle, and southwest Georgia, will be in effect from noon central on Tuesday, January 21, until 6 a.m. central Wednesday, January 22.
