Heavy snow and freezing temperatures are expected across parts of the north-east and Midwest.

National Weather Service winter storm warnings are in place across 12 states, in the north and north-east of the country, on Saturday with up to nine inches of snow forecast for some areas.The states covered by warnings, in part or in full, are Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, New York, Massachusetts, Connecticut, Rhode Island, New Jersey, Wisconsin, Minnesota and both North and South Dakota.

The heaviest snow is forecast further east, with the NWS warning of between six and nine inches for Central Interior Cumberland and Coastal Cumberland counties in Maine, along with Chenango, Madison, Otsego, and Southern Oneida counties in New York state.These warnings take effect at 7 p.m. ET on Saturday and last until either 7 a.m. or 1 p.m. ET on Sunday.In Vermont, the NWS forecasts snow accumulations of between five and eight inches, with the winter storm warning in place from 7 p.m.
