Community members and faith leaders gathered from across the county Saturday morning to push Williamson County Commissioners to move the Confederate monument from the grounds of the Williamson County Courthouse , calling the event “Move the Monument: An Interfaith and Community Gathering.”
Since 2017, Confederate monuments have been removed from courthouse squares and public parks in areas including Dallas, Denton, Gainesville, Houston, Lockhart, and San Antonio.It features a Confederate soldier, the Confederate States of America emblem, and the Confederate battle flag. Organizations that sponsored and helped organize the event included the Central Texas Methodist Federation for Social Action, the Courageous Conversations of Georgetown, the Georgetown Ministerial Alliance, GTX Connect, the Wellspring United Methodist Church, and the Wilco Patriots.
"We want people to know what the origins of Confederate monuments are around the South," Courageous Conversations Georgetown member Georgianne Hewett said. "It doesn't represent us. We are a warm, welcoming community that wants all people of all backgrounds to feel comfortable."
