In a court filing, Merin George alleges they failed to start her husband, Tom Thomas, on basic interventions for a cardiac patient or resuscitate him before heThe statement of claim alleges their negligence “caused or contributed to the death of Mr. Thomas” and seeks damages for George and their daughter, who was only 18 months old when Thomas died. His parents are also named as beneficiaries.George, through a lawyer, declined to comment.

Thomas, a 34-year-old known to his community as a family man and choir singer, tested positive for COVID-19 before his death, making him the first known case of a health-care worker who died with the disease in Saskatchewan. He had moved to Canada from India years before and was studying to become a registered nurse, friends told Postmedia shortly after his passing.

Premier Scott Moe called him a “young hero” in a press conference at the time. An online crowdfunding campaign organized by Thomas’s church raised more than $92,000 for funeral expenses, including repatriation of the body to the Indian province of Kerala, where Thomas’s family lived.Article content
