Researchers have now suggested that dreams can be used as a form of therapy for anxiety disorders.

In life, we’ve got to take the good dreams with the bad. While most of us will wake up smiling after the former; the latter leaves us trying to dissect exactly why we dreamt about our ex-boyfriend turning up unannounced during a work meeting for the millionth time. Our attempts to analyse and interpret our dreams might be nothing new, but a recent

carried out by the University of Geneva found, for the first time, that an apparently “bad” dream may actuallyyou in real life. Better yet, researchers have now suggested that dreams can be used as a form of therapy for anxiety disorders.

“The second theory is that nightmares are like virtual reality; we simulate threats from waking life in dreams and nightmares and practice overcoming them, like running away from lions. Having these nightmares, even if they are distressing, is thus useful to us from an evolutionary point of view, as it makes us fitter, even if more stressed.

“The third view is that nightmares have no purpose, they are just distressing and have no benefit for us.”As it turns out, most of our dreams can be considered to be ‘bad’.

In short: enjoy the good dreams, but try to embrace the bad ones too – they might bring hidden benefits.
