'We saw the stress and fatigue of other parents that had had more than one child, and we just said, 'we don't want to do that, why put the pressure on ourselves?''
Soon after I had my second baby, my obstetrician told me: "You'll know when you're done having kids when your youngest goes to school for the first time. You'll either feel relieved those difficult early years are over — or so sad that you'll want to do it all again.
Before we dive in, ABC Everyday would like to acknowledge those who are struggling with infertility, as not everybody is in a position to decide whether to have children."Our daughter at the moment is really lobbying for another kid and we're trying to explain the reasons why we're not going to have another one," Cara says."
Their decision to be 'one and done' was influenced by their busy careers: "We both work in music, so we're often away, our hours are really extreme," says Cara, who's a director of her own company."We actually just can't afford it. We could if we tried, but we'd be letting go of a lot of things" such as holidays, she says.When their daughter was born, the family was renting, and "even then, the market was extremely volatile", Cara says.
"We're not casting any aspersions on anyone who chooses to have more than one child. It's just not for us. We thought, 'Why? Why get more grey hair?'"
