Mario is reaching new heights in The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, but one key change has everyone confused. Following the highly successful The Super Mario Bros. Movie in 2023, which grossed over $1.36 billion worldwide, Chris Pratt and Charlie Day are reuniting as Mario and Luigi in the highly-anticipated animated sequel The Super Mario Galaxy Movie.
Despite having a divisive first movie, directors Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic continue to smash records and hope to replicate the same success for the sequel. Mario is easily one of the most iconic characters in gaming worldwide, and one of his many catchphrases is"mamma mia," but Pratt's version may not be the version most are used to. In an interview with ScreenRant's Ash Crossan for The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, Pratt, alongside Benny Safdie, who's joining the sequel as Bowser Jr., discussed exactly how and why Mario's iconic catchphrase has been altered to fit the new movie adaptations.Chris Pratt: A lot of getting hit, jumping, bouncing around, and things like that. There's one sound... I don't necessarily know if it would be an effort sound, but it's a line, which is– I'm not going to say it right now because I haven't done all my vocal warmups. I don't want to do it, but it's"Mamma Mia." It's"Mamma Mia." And when you hear that original version of the character, it's in Italian. It's like, "Mamma Mia." And I'm like,"Why does it make sense for a guy who's from Brooklyn who doesn't have that accent to use that so much?" So it was always tough. They're like,"It's written as 'Mamma Mia.'" But I'm like, if I'm expressing some reverence or some sense of,"Oh wow, Mamma Mia." But that's not something necessarily a person says unless they're doing the Italian accent. So it's always really hard to find how"Mamma Mia" works.Chris Pratt: I've always tried to vary. I think that's maybe why they slowed it down to take some of the stink off it because I'm not sure I ever fully got it right, but it's like,"Maaammaaa Miaaaa." Due to Mario being such an iconic character, Pratt had to adapt when transforming into him for the voice acting role. Pratt took on the character and gave his roots as being from Brooklyn some more credence when stating"mamma mia." Some characters and stars are returning for the sequel, including Jack Black as Bowser, Anya Taylor-Joy as Princess Peach, and Keegan-Michael Key as Toad. New stars being added to the line-up are Brie Larson as Rosalina, Safdie as Bowser Jr., Donald Glover as Yoshi, Issa Rae as Honey Queen, Glenn Powell as Fox McCloud, and Luis Guzman as Wart. It has been promised that some iconic characters from the franchise will also be making surprise appearances.
