When Silicon Valley veteran Larry Marshall breezed in to run Australia’s national science agency in 2015, he was the very definition of a disrupter. Now he says it is time to go.

Outgoing CSIRO chief executive Larry Marshall says his successor will need to keep pushing Australian politicians and business leaders to invest in improving the country’s stubbornly low global innovation rankings to increase productivity and encourage new industry.

“I can’t tell you how hard it is to leave. But every CEO, if they’re not careful, becomes part of the problem. His concerns about innovation rankings are related to World Intellectual Property Organisation figures that rank countries on innovation efficiency and economic complexity. “Australian industry and venture is historically pretty risk-averse compared to our US counterparts, which is why at CSIRO we focused on eight missions for us and the country to tackle.can really leverage missions alongside Australian companies to co-fund these important things, and that will really draw the whole university sector in to support the NRF in a way that really could be transformative for Australia.
