The reasons go beyond just his age. OpEd

: It’s no longer enough to ask if Biden is too old to govern, but what are the costs of living in a gerontocracy, or rule by elders? Why are our political leaders unwilling to pass leadership on to the next generation? What do they believe entitles them to seemingly never-ending political leadership as their physical and intellectual capacities diminish? The entitlement piece is crucial here.

While the 2024 presidential election cycle has yet to kick off, Biden will likely employ the same rhetorical that sent him to the White House in 2020. He won’t just be the best candidate for Democrats in 2024, he’ll be the mostcandidate. Our only real viable option. Part of that belief is rooted in our nation’s unequal systems of political representation. We don’t elect presidents in democratic ways, it’s true, but Biden has shown himself unwilling to address systems like thethat facilitate the injustice. The only tangible response he has put forward to our unequal system of electing presidents is his own candidacy. That’s because there is more than raw political calculus in Biden’s decision to run again. There’s also entitlement, paternalism, and a very specific theory of change. His 2024 candidacy will likely rest on the premise that it is better for the country to select a candidate who will benefit from the electoral college than to fight for a system that tabulates our votes equally. That it is rational in our current political landscape to see whiteness and maleness as inherent assets in presidents and marginalized identities — be it Blackness, womanhood, or queerness — as political risks better suited for other elected offices. For the Biden administration, the solution to rising fascism and voter disenfranchisement lies not in using every tool at their disposal to ensure democratic elections, but in simply electing the “right” people who canLet me be blunt: That logic is dangerous. It holds that only people with the political, financial, and institutional power to overcome our broken election system can realistically run and win presidential elections in a post-Trump political environment. It uses the system as a shield to reinforce the very philosophy this country was founded upon: the inherent superiority of white men. And yet, it has become the primary election strategy for the Democratic Party. The system isn’t necessarily fair, they say, but we must play the game. White moderates like Biden have a lot of power and broad-based appeal. They can energize the people we need. They may not always play to base constituencies like Black voters, women, immigrant communities, queer folk, and young people who pulled off
