'Literacy is the ladder out of poverty.'
. I traveled throughout the state handing out a new book from this list to every Head Start child. The program directors told me many of the children didn’t have one book at home and were ecstatic to take home one of their very own.
The results of this project were beyond my expectations. When I revisited many of these classrooms, I saw firsthand that the children had developed a magical connection to the book. This is because the children heard the story in school, often with accompanying activities such as coloring sheets or other simple crafts projects tied to the theme, and were able to enjoy the book at home even if no one was available to read to them.
The best part about donating a new, favorite book to a young child living in a book desert is that you can see the immediate impact. Even if you’re not a kid person, it can be pretty cool to see a child bond with your favorite childhood book, all while hopefully fostering a lifetime love of reading. We can all work together to end book deserts and we can do it one book at a time.
