Harrison Ford explains why he returned for one last Indiana Jones movie. “I just thought it would be nice to see one where Indiana Jones was at the end of his journey.”
Harrison Ford opens up about the reasons he returned for Indiana Jones 5. The fifth installment of the Indiana Jones franchise is directed by James Mangold, who previously helmed Logan, Ford V Ferrari, and Walk the Line. This is also the first film in the series not to be directed by Steven Spielberg, who is serving as executive producer.
SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY While speaking with Empire, Ford was asked why he returned for Indiana Jones 5. The actor gave a simple answer, stating, "I just thought it would be nice to see one where Indiana Jones was at the end of his journey." Ford seemingly wanted more time with Jones, saying his role reprisal depended on "If a script came along that I felt gave me a way to extend the character.
Will Harrison Ford Pass The Torch In Indiana Jones 5? The Indiana Jones franchise is beloved by audiences, making it a property that could potentially thrive in the future. However, with Ford's sentiments on why he returned for Indiana Jones 5 and his current age, it sounds like it will be his last time playing the role. With that in mind, it's possible that the series offers a passing of the torch, so to speak, which could see someone else donning the fedora.
Recent rumors about Indiana Jones 5 test screenings stated that one of the endings shown to audiences featured a passing of the torch to Waller-Bridge's new character Helena. Mangold has since denied those rumors, yet many feel like that is still the aim of the film. Furthermore, a series based on Indiana Jones has been announced as being in development for Disney+.
The franchise has attempted passing the torch before, with 2008's Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull setting up Shia LaBeouf's Mutt to potentially carry on the franchise. Given that Mutt was revealed to be the son of Indy and Marion, with the couple getting married at the end of the film, it felt like the setup was built into the story. However, Indy kept his fedora in the final moments, with Mutt left to hope for his chance later down the line.
