Deep penetration of cold temperatures and a coastal storm will bring bomb cyclone and polar vortex into your newsfeeds. Here's why.
Irrespective of what is going on with our climate, it is supposed to be cold here in the Northern Hemisphere right now because the Earth is tilting away from the Sun in its orbit. As much of the United States recovers from a huge winter storm , frigid Arctic air is entrenched across much of the country.
Over the next week or so, two winter weather buzzwords — Bomb Cyclone and Polar Vortex — will be dominating your newsfeeds. Here’s why.: “Not hype. A true bomb cyclone along the Eastern Seaboard will propel Arctic Air south Sunday.” He went on to warn his Florida viewers that wind-chill potential could be in the single digits in northern Florida, teens near Tampa and Orlando, and in the 20s in southern Florida.it as, “a rapidly deepening extratropical surface cyclone with a central pressure that falls on the average of at least 1 hPa h−1 for 24 h." After accounting for variations, like for geostrophic wind speed, "It requires a larger pressure drop to qualify as a bomb cyclone at higher latitudes compared to lower latitudes.” The process of a low pressure cyclone forming is called cyclogenesis. The formation of a bomb cyclone is often referred to as “explosive cyclogenesis” or "bombogenesis."is a bit less jargon-laden. Bombogenesis,"occurs when a midlatitude cyclone rapidly intensifies, or strengthens, over a 24 hour period. This intensification is represented by a drop in millibars, a measurement of pressure used in meteorology. The intensification required to classify as ‘bombogenesis’ varies by latitude." Though there are some differences, major global weather models are in good agreement on a high-impact coastal low aggressively intensifying. There is more uncertainty at this point on what track the storm will take. NOAA’s Weather Prediction Center wrote on Tuesday morning, “subtle differences in the track off the coast not surprisingly lead to a lot more uncertainty with respect to the potential impacts." The statement added that, "greatest consensus amongst the guidance is for coastal areas and possibly further inland across the Carolinas and southern New England, with more uncertainty through the Mid-Atlantic.”Now, let’s explore the Polar Vortex. It is one of the most misunderstood and poorly-explained weather processes. I see headlines like “The Polar Vortex has come to Florida” or “The Polar Vortex is like an Arctic Storm that has come to visit us.” According to NOAA, the Polar Vortex is, “a low pressure area—a wide expanse of swirling cold air—that is parked in polar regions.” It’s generally there, but in the winter, it can be disrupted and lead to intrusions of brutally-cold air southward. NOAA said, “This happens fairly regularly and is often associated with outbreaks of cold temperatures in the United States.”surges in the wake of the historic winter storm will maintain dangerously cold temperatures for the central and eastern U.S. well into next week as per the Climate Prediction Center. That surge of cold air will likely penetrate into Florida and even some Caribbean Islands like the Bahamas and Cuba.
