DC's Gotham War shows a Batman desperate to return to his lone crusade, but that hasn't been the character's status quo for a long time.
SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT Summary The Gotham War has taken a heavy toll on Batman's psyche, with him growing firmly entrenched in the mindset that the only way he can succeed in his war on crime is by abandoning his allies and returning to his one-man crusade. But for all that he may protest, Batman is no longer the one-man army facing down Gotham's corruption — and he hasn't been for a very long time.
Batman #138 by Chip Zdarsky, Jorge Jiménez, Tomeu Morey, and Clayton Cowles shows just how far gone Batman has become as he turns on his sons one-by-one. After kidnapping Jason Todd, Batman reveals that he has used the Zur-En-Arrh program to trigger Jason into feeling intense fear at the prospect of doing anything dangerous in an attempt to cut him off from vigilantism for good.
Batman takes advantage of the situation: he traps Grayson and Tim in a net and abandons them, as well as Damian, reflecting on how "It was only ever supposed to be me. One man, stopping crime."Batman Yearns for a Past That Never Existed Batman's "lone" crusade against crime did not last very long; Robin was introduced in 1940 via Bill Kane, Bob Finger, and Jerry Robinson's Detective Comics #38, only one year after Batman's own debut in Detective Comics #27.
The family aspect of Batman comics became fully codified with the introduction of Damian Wayne in Batman #655 by Grant Morrison, Andy Kubert, and Dave Stewart. Damian's status as the lone biological son of Bruce Wayne explicitly calls out Batman's role as a father to his Robins, especially after Damian officially takes up the mantle.
The days in which Batman functioned as a sole agent were few and far between, and nearly a century old to boot. The character today is almost completely unrecognizable from his origins. The Bat-Family has become such a core DC institution that there are whole publications dedicated to exploring the family dynamics between its many members.
