Golesh described why it was important to him to sign players already familiar with the staff
Some successful programs have used that formula, the most prominent being Indiana, which won the program’s first national championship less than a month ago. What Cignetti did in two years at Indiana is the exception rather than the rule, but Golesh recently spoke about how much bringing in players already familiar with the staff can benefit the program.
“I think twofold, the familiarity with the offense is absolutely huge,” Golesh said at Senior Bowl practice. “I think just as important as that, and honestly more important, in a lot of ways, is those guys coming in and almost stamping the staff... “When I say stamping, the locker room controls the narrative of the program, right? Like, that’s where guys either walk in and say, ‘Man, what the hell are we doing?’ Or they walk in and say, ‘Man, I like, what’s going on in here.’” Of the 13 transfers who followed Golesh, 11 are on offense. Considering how much of USF’s former offensive staff came to Auburn, that makes sense. It also makes sense from Auburn’s perspective when looking at USF’s offensive success. The Bulls finished the 2025 campaign third nationally in total yards per game.Players such as Brown, Best and Singleton spent multiple years with Golesh at USF, already making them potential leaders at Auburn. Having players who can help sell what the staff is bringing was important to Golesh. “You’ve got a foundation of guys that either which way that conversation goes, they can say, ‘Hey, give that guy a shot, and that’s everything,” Golesh said. “That’s not just the coaches. That’s not the offensive scheme. It’s the strength staff, it’s sports medicine, it’s nutrition, it’s every part of the program that touches these guys. “Those guys can stand and I think more than anything, that group of guys can say, ‘Hey, listen, like, whatever this was here, these guys are about culture, about relationships, about development, like these are real guys.” Golesh mentioned having players who can do that within the locker room helps build trust between the new staff and returning players. That’s especially important when you’re trying to keep a roster together and there’s not much time to get to know the team. “I think for the guys that chose to stay, like those guys’ perception of what college football is totally based on their relationships and their experience with the previous staff,” Golesh said. “Has nothing to do with us, and the guys that came with give you a level of credibility that you need to have to be able to go and build quickly right now.”Peter Rauterkus is an Auburn Sports Reporter for AL.com covering football, basketball and all things Auburn sports.
