Whoever wins the Masters, it won’t be a South African
Although there is still plenty of golf to be played in the first major of the season – after two weather interruptions on Friday and the weather forecaster in Augusta, US, predicting further storms over the weekend – it is clear that this year’s winner at the Augusta National Golf Club will not be a South African.
Amateur Aldrich Potgieter, who is only 18 years old, birdied two of the par-fives and the 14th, but dropped several shots as well to lie well below the cut line on seven-over for the tournament.Schwartzel, who was in the same flight, was standing on three-over for the tournament and – with the cut line on two-over when play was suspended – was in danger of not making it into the weekend.
Should the cut stay on two-over and Schwartzel not make it into the weekend, it will be the first time since 1986 that no South Africans have played in the third and fourth rounds at the Masters.Schwartzel said it would be very unfortunate if that were the case: The 2012 Masters winner is one of several South Africans who have joined the upstart LIV Golf Tour and have been struggling to get world ranking points, which is one of the qualifying criteria for the Masters.“I don’t know. Dean [Burmeister] didn’t make it on world ranking anyway. Brandon [Grace] might have made it and he’s in form, so he could have been here – but I don’t know,” he said.
