CLEVELAND, Ohio – after former Interim Sheriff Steven Hammett abruptly resigned. He was the sixth sheriff to resign since the formation of the new county government.

The ordinance amendment was introduced on Tuesday and will go before council’s Public Safety and Justice Affairs Committee, which Gallagher chairs, for discussion and consideration at 1 p.m. on Tuesday.elevated the sheriff to a chief-level position with more direct access to his office “I wake up some days and say, ‘should I recommend that the sheriff be fired?’ and I don’t really have anybody to ask,” Sweeney said during the meeting.

It has received 447 signatures as of Thursday, many of them from current or former corrections officers. But in the absence of an elected sheriff, removing the sheriff from under the executive and granting them independent powers might be the closest the position comes to being autonomous under the current charter, Gallagher said.
