The man forged the woman's signature on a deed, conveying her right, title, and interest in her house on Ridge Street in Newark to him, officials said.
In December 2016, the office’s financial crimes unit began an investigation into alleged acts of forgery and theft by Obadiah Salters, 36, of Newark, against the woman, who has a diagnosed mental health condition, authorities said.
Two months later, he forged her signature again, this time on a deed, conveying the right, title, and interest in her house on Ridge Street to him, investigators said. At the time, the house, which was her childhood home that she inherited from her parents after living there for more than 40 years, had an assessed value of $172,000.
Following a four-day trial, a jury found Salters guilty on all 24 counts relating to the theft and forgery charges, the office said. He is scheduled to be sentenced on May 4.
