The three combine for 44 points to lift 11th-ranked Crusaders in rematch of '25 final
Senior guard Austin Workman of No. 11 Morris Catholic scored a game-high 16 points and recorded 7 assists Saturday against Chatham in the Morris County Tournament final at Count College of Morris in Randolph.
There were sporadic stretches in the game where Donnie Gregory was able to showcase his elegant jumper, Austin Workman displayed his wide range of skills as a rebounder, shooter and finisher at the rim, and moments where Morris Catholic looked like one of the best shot-blocking teams in the state. There was a constant throughout the night for Morris Catholic, though, and it was junior guard Cameron White making himself a nuisance both on the ball defensively and with the ball, as he regularly busted Chatham’s pressure with scorching dribble drives to the rack. “They pressed the whole game, so it was just breaking the press, getting easy shots and then rebounding, getting stops and running,” White said. The 6-6 Workman finished as high scorer with 16 points after going scoreless in the first quarter, the 6-0 White scored 15 points and had two steals and even a block, and 6-4 senior guard Donnie Gregory scored 13 points to guide top-seeded and 11th-ranked Morris Catholic to a 62-52 win over sixth-seeded Chatham in the Morris County Tournament final Saturday night at County College of Morris in Randolph.Senior guard Michael MacAniff and junior guard Jalen Forehan-Kelly scored 12 points apiece and senior forward Marco Mannino scored nine points and took down seven rebounds for Chatham . White had scored a team-high 16 points in last week’s 80-53 semifinal victory over Montville by the being the same disruptive blur through the lane that he was in the final. He was named tournament Most Outstanding Player for being the guy Chatham wasn’t able to neutralize when it could have used a big defensive stop to overcome some of its shooting woes. “They disrupted a lot of our shots, but we just didn’t score enough,” Chatham head coach Todd Ervin said. “We probably played defense pretty well, and we didn’t rebound great, but we just didn’t put enough points on the board. Had plenty of chances.” Morris Catholic did swat away seven pf those chances, with 6-4 senior Chrystian Grubbs leading the block party with three. “Our defense has come a long way, especially from the start of the season,” Workman said. “I mean holding teams like this to this few amount of points means a lot.”I have been covering N.J. high school sports full time since 1982; most of that time with The Star-Ledger/NJ.com.
