The White House criticized House Oversight Chairman James Comer (R-KY) for scheduling an impeachment hearing of President Joe Biden ahead of a looming government shutdown.

White House spokesman Ian Sams said in a statement Tuesday that the decision to schedule an impeachment hearing on Sept. 28, just two days before the deadline to fund the government for the coming fiscal year, is an effort to"distract from their own chaotic inability to govern and the impacts of it on the country.

"Their shutdown would hurt our economy and national security, furlough thousands of federal workers, and jeopardize everything from troop pay to disaster relief to efforts to fight fentanyl," he continued.

"The President has been very clear: He is going to remain focused on the issues that matter to the American people, including preventing the devastating and harmful cuts proposed by House Republicans that are hurtling us toward a government shutdown," Sams concluded."House Republicans should drop these silly political Washington games and actually do their job to prevent a government shutdown.

"The hearing will focus on constitutional and legal questions surrounding the President’s involvement in corruption and abuse of public office," an Oversight spokesperson added in a statement."The Oversight Committee will continue to follow the evidence and money trail to provide the transparency and accountability that Americans demand from their government."
