Tonight’s freeze is a bit later than our typical last freeze.
MONTGOMERY, Ala. - A widespread freeze is going to impact most of Alabama Monday night and Tuesday morning. Temperatures at or below freezing are not unheard of in late March; they are a bit uncommon though.
Tonight’s forecast low in Montgomery is 31 degrees. If that winds up being true, it would be well shy of breaking the record for March 19th. That belongs to the 24-degree temp recorded way back on March 19, 1892.Dating back to 2000, there have been 10 days with freezing temperatures in MontgomeryTwo of those actually occurred in April -- one on the 8th and one on the 9th.
Now those were a bit unusual. April freezes don’t happen too often in Central Alabama. If you’re curious, the latest freeze ever recorded in Montgomery occurred back on April 13, 1940.The average date for the final freeze in the Capital City is March 8th. So getting a subfreezing temperature on March 19th is later than normal, but it’s not unprecedented territory. For simplicity, I’m using a temperature at or below 36 degrees to qualify as a frost event.
While it’s impossible to tell if there will be any additional frosts and/or freezes later this month or in April, what I can tell you is we can’t rule it out. I’d wait until at least the second week of April to plant anything, if possible.
