Aaron Boone is in the dark about his job status as he wraps up this season, his first year without a trip to the playoffs as manager of the Yankees.
Boone losing his job certainly seems to be what the fan base is in favor of. Many home games during the latter part of this season have featured at least one “FIRE CASHMAN” or “FIRE BOONE” chant. On Monday, it was one boisterous fan near the press box, shouting at the top of his lungs for the skipper to be relieved of his duties during an injury visit with starter Clarke Schmidt in the third.
It wasn’t hard to make out what the fan said. The Stadium was as empty as its been in a long time — a makeup game for a team that’s out of the postseason race on a weekday with soggy and chilly conditions will do that. Boone plans to take a step back this winter and conduct a self-assessment of his performance as manager. He said he hasn’t been told definitively if he’ll be back next season, but until he’s given orders one way or another, he’s focusing on helping the Yankees get better.
“It’s out of my hands,” Boone said. “I’m completely comfortable with who I am, the things I can control and my job is, in my mind, doing everything to head into the offseason to prepare to put us in a better position to try and compete for a championship. That’s what the goal is and until they take that away, that’s my focus.”
