The Ohio Department of Agriculture has issued a quarantine for multiple Northeast Ohio counties due to the invasive spotted lanternfly.
OHIO -
The spotted lanternfly is fond of grapevines, fruit trees, hops, blueberry, oak, pine, poplar and walnut.According to the ODA, the pest is not known to kill plants other than grapevines, black walnut saplings and tree of heaven. For people living in counties under quarantine, here’s what to know to about stopping the spread. If you see egg masses, smash, and scrape them off before the next generation can hatch.
Scraping egg masses with a knife or edge of a credit card into soapy water or rubbing alcohol will kill the eggs. When populations are low, acceptable control may be achieved by swatting or stomping nymphs and adults. Removing favored spotted lanternfly hosts, like the invasive tree of heaven or grapevine, can reduce populations on your property.Spotted lanternfly egg masses can be laid on surfaces of various outdoor objects. Please inspect carefully!Producers may be subject to stock inspections and each load must be accompanied by a certificate confirming their product is free of spotted lanternfly.
