Acting director-general of GCIS Nomonde Mnukwa said Ramaphosa’s address will provide an opportunity to reflect on developments taking place across the country and set the country’s game plan for the year ahead. “Importantly, he will also outline the work of government to address the looming crisis of water security that poses a threat to the quality of life and economic prospects of all South Africans.”

But, University of North West political analyst Professor Andre Duvenhage said this year’s SONA is going to be extremely difficult because it will be the first time under GNU. “There are huge expectations of bills like basic Education Laws Amendment Act, Expropriation Bill, and NHI Act, so he must reflect on the performance of the government,” he said.“He does not have another choice but to accommodate them, but if he accommodates parties like DA, FF Plus, and others, it is going to backfire within the ANC. There is a huge pressure on him to take the road to the national democratic revolution.

The MK Party, led by former President Jacob Zuma, argues that the term is inaccurate as it excludes major parties like the MK Party and the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF). Their legal representative, Advocate Dali Mpofu, contends that a true GNU requires participation from parties representing a significant majority of the electorate, which is not the case in the current coalition. The SABC, however, maintains that the term is not subject to legal review and that internal remedies should have been exhausted.
