A new book explains who sharks really are and why they deserve better treatment.

Enthusiasts, educators, kids, naturalists, college students, conservationists, Shark Week devotees, and readers ofthrough the water might be a cause for excitement, wonder, or even concern, represent our intended audience. It is of critical importance that scientific concepts, conservation issues, and just plain cool facts about sharks be made accessible to this larger audience.

Throughout, we highlight conservation information, knowledge gaps, and salient discoveries. We are in awe of sharks, and we respect our readers, and we hope these are equally represented.DCA: There are many outstanding books about sharks, with new ones frequently published; we have others on the way as well. Our bookshelves overflow with them. Still, we feel thatis unique in the combination of its approach and its lavish photographs and other illustrations; it passes the “flip test” that books like ours must meet, and fulfills a need for clear, sufficiently detailed writing that is authoritative but not intimidating. As writers, we prize clarity.

DCA: Yes, we are hopeful. We teach our students that sharks—and butterflies, trees, sea slugs, tigers, and so on—should be treated with more compassion, respect, and dignity.
