President Donald Trump signed the Laken Riley Act into law Wednesday, nearly a year after the Georgia nursing student was murdered by an unauthorized immigrant who was arrested in Texas . The law, which garnered bipartisan support, orders the detainment of unauthorized immigrants accused of theft, burglary, assaulting a law enforcement officer or crimes causing death or serious bodily injury.

Riley, 22-year-old student at the Augusta University College of Nursing, was slain while on a run Feb. 22. Jose Ibarra, a 26-year-old Venezuelan migrant, was convicted of her murder in November and sentenced to life in prison without parole. Trump and other top Republicans said Riley's death was a result of former President Joe Biden's border policy, making the nursing student an enduring symbol of his campaign promise to crack down on illegal immigration. 'It is time to secure our Border, and remove these criminals and thugs from our Country, so nothing like this can happen again!' Riley's family attended Trump's signing of the law Wednesday, and Trump comforted Riley's mother as she spoke in support of the legislation.
