Breaking down Brown's move to Auburn and what he brings to the program

on Tuesday, immediately giving head coach Alex Golesh and the program a ready-made starter in 2026. This season at USF, he threw for 3,158 yards and 28 touchdowns while rushing for 1,008 yards and 14 touchdowns.

While he’s new to Auburn, Brown comes to the Plains already familiar with Golesh, offensive coordinator Joel Gordon and most of the offensive staff. He was USF’s starter for all three of Golesh’s seasons in Tampa, where he worked closely with Gordon, who coached quarterbacks and called the offense. Brown’s production with the Bulls makes him one of the top returning quarterbacks in 2026. He led the country in total yards per game in 2025 and finished with more passing yards than any Auburn quarterback in the program’s history. He’s ranked by 247Sports as the seventh-best quarterback in the transfer portal and is ranked No. 4 by On3. What arguably makes him an even better get than some of the other top quarterbacks, though, is continuity. When you have large-scale changes like you’ve had at Auburn, being able to keep a system together can go a long way, especially on offense. Brown spent three years with Golesh and Gordon at USF, meaning there won’t be any kind of learning curve or adjustment period in the offense. South Florida head coach Alex Golesh, left, talks to quarterback Byrum Brown during a timeout in the first half against North Texas in an NCAA college football game Friday, Oct. 10, 2025, in Denton, Texas. The fact that USF’s offense finished the regular season second nationally in total yards per game is another bonus when taking that continuity into consideration. While it’s fair to question how it might translate to the SEC, the talent is undeniable, particularly from Brown. Can all of those players match up with SEC defensive backs? Time will tell, but it gives Brown a few targets that he’s already familiar with. Listed at 6-foot-3 and 231 pounds, Brown’s build makes him a powerhouse both as a passer and a runner. He rushed for 1,008 yards last season, and was never afraid of contact, often lowering his shoulder and running through someone if it meant getting a first down or reaching the goal line. Brown averaged 4.42 yards after contact per attempt in 2025, according to Pro Football Focus, which ranked second nationally among quarterbacks. His throwing mechanics are unorthodox, but when it has worked for him the way it has, it’s hard to question it too much. Brown was the AAC’s highest-graded passes in 2025, according to PFF. The PFF stat that stands out most is his big time throw rate. PFF defines a big time throw as “a pass with excellent ball location and timing, generally thrown further down the field and/or into a tighter window.” Brown made 21 big time throws in 2025, per PFF, and his 5.7% big time throw rate led the conference. While it’s easy to see Brown’s physical tools, his decision-making was another strength in 2025. He finished the season with the second-lowest turnover worthy player percentage in the AAC, according to PFF, and threw just seven interceptions in 341 pass attempts. Turnovers weren’t as big of an issue for Auburn’s quarterbacks in 2025, but they plagued the position for much of Hugh Freeze’s tenure. Golesh and Gordon’s offense gets some credit for putting Brown in more favorable positions, but his decision-making is a plus for the offense. On paper, Brown is the most proven quarterback Auburn has ever brought into the program. His size and playing style may even draw comparisons from some to another transfer quarterback who won a Heisman Trophy and national championship at Auburn. Placing those expectations on any player yet to play a snap for their new team isn’t wise, but there’s a reason for Auburn fans to be excited. The program that has been a quarterback desert for close to six seasons finally has someone with a resume that could break the drought on its own.Peter Rauterkus is an Auburn Sports Reporter for AL.com covering football, basketball and all things Auburn sports.
