Echols explained why he wanted to follow his head coach from USF to Auburn
Echols spent the last two seasons with Golesh in Tampa, catching nine passes for 109 yards and three touchdowns in 2025. That made the decision to transfer to Auburn an easy one, as he’ll reunite with many of his coaches on the Plains.
“I already had my belief in trusting them for what, five years now,” Echols said. “What they got going on, what they got building over here is going to be good.” Despite being familiar with Golesh and many of the other Auburn staff members, he’ll have a new position coach on the Plains. Auburn hired former Howard head coach“He’s a really great coach,” Echols said. “He done coached a lot of good guys, and I’m really excited to get to work with him.” A native of Franklin, Georgia, Echols grew up just over an hour away from Auburn’s campus. When asked what stood out about being in Auburn for his visit, he described it as “home.” Echols’ signing is big for Auburn, as it comes at a major position of need. Freshman Ryan Ghea is the Tigers’ only returning tight end in 2026 and they signed just one incoming freshman, Mobile native DJ Broughton. Echols brings experience in the offense to the tight end and may not be the only tight end Auburn signs. With Echols, Ghea and Broughton now on the roster, the Tigers will likely sign at least one more tight end, if not two. As of Monday morning, Auburn has added nine players out of the transfer portal, with eight coming from USF. The transfer portal officially opened on Jan. 2 and will remain open until Jan. 16.
