Parts of the Alaska Highway in northeastern British Columbia are closed due to wildfires.

ANCHORAGE, Alaska - Wildfires raging in western Canada have forced evacuations and closed part of the Alaska Highway , diverting travel away from the threatened town of Fort Nelson, British Columbia.

Access to Fort Nelson is cut off approximately four miles east of the Liard Highway — or BC-77 — junction. The Liard Highway is closed from the 97 junction to the Northwest Territories. Thewere issued for the town of Fort Nelson as well as the nearby Fort Nelson First Nation. The evacuation order names three active fires as threats to the region — Nogah Creek fire at 149,000 acres, Patry Creek fire at 84,750 acres, and Parker Lake fire at 13,000 acres.

According to the Associated Press, more than 4,700 people were evacuated as the Parker Lake fire encroached a mile and half from the town. Forecasted high winds and the inability to control the blaze of roughly 20 square miles could mean a tough road ahead for fire crews.
