Despite achieving record-breaking numbers in December, the San Antonio Spurs' Victor Wembanyama was edged out for Western Conference Player of the Month by Oklahoma City's Shai Gilgeous-Alexander. Wembanyama became the first NBA player to accumulate 300 points, 100 rebounds, 50 blocks, 50 assists, and 40 three-pointers in a single month. Over 12 games, he averaged 28.5 points, 10.0 rebounds, 4.8 assists, 4.4 blocks, and 3.6 three-pointers while shooting 37.

Gilgeous-Alexander earned the award after averaging 33.3 points and 2.5 steals, shooting 56.3% from the field, leading the Thunder to a 12-1 record. New York's Karl-Anthony Towns was recognized in the East after averaging 23.2 points and 14.6 rebounds, propelling the Knicks to a 12-2 showing. Wembanyama was one of 10 players nominated for the honor in the West. He also lost to Memphis' Jaren Jackson Jr. for Western Conference Defensive Player of the Month after winning the award for October/November in the inaugural season of the honor. Wembanyama leads the NBA in blocks per game, but Jackson Jr. totaled 23 steals and 22 blocks in 14 games to guide the Grizzlies to a 10-4 record. Wembanyama twice scored 42 points in a game during the month, including a Christmas Day loss to the Knicks in New York where he also had 18 rebounds, four assists, and four blocks in a career-high 40 minutes. 'He is playing stronger, more physical, more fundamentally sound, and it's crazy how spectacular his simple is,' acting Spurs coach Mitch Johnson said. Another coach agreed. 'He's been a lot more aggressive,' said the Los Angeles Clippers' Ty Lue before Wembanyama had 27 points, nine rebounds, five assists, three blocks, and one steal in just 26 minutes, leading the Spurs to a 122-86 rout of the Clippers on New Year's Eve
