Our challenge took us Carl’s Jr., Del Taco, In-N-Out Burger, Jack in the Box, and McDonald’s for a burger, side, dessert and drink.

A hamburger, medium fries and a root beer float of the secret menu costs $9.56 at In-N-Out Burger. You can’t always get what you want, but if you try you can get a fast-food meal for $10 — sometimes.

The ground rules were to try to get four items — burger, side, drink and dessert — without resorting to member’s rewards, digital deals or kids meals.This Lake Forest chain is known for its Mexican food, but burgers and fries have been on the menu from its start. We went with Combo No. 3, which includes a hamburger with no cheese, medium fries and medium soft drink.
