The number of people hospitalized with COVID-19 in North Texas is still growing, a trend that is likely to continue for at least another week or longer,...

COVID-19 patients require more resources than non-COVID patients. As the portion of hospitalized patients positive for the virus rises, so does the amount of support short-staffed hospitals have to provide.

The additional care required even applies to patients who weren’t primarily admitted to the hospital because of COVID-19, said Dr. Alejandro Arroliga, chief of medicine at Baylor Scott & White Health System. “If you are that person, would you want us to treat you only for heart failure?” he asked. “Or would you want us to treat you for heart failure and COVID?”

What’s particularly worrying experts as cases continue to climb is the number of staff out from the virus or other illnesses. The North Texas area is down about 15% in health care staff, according to the D-FW Hospital Council.
