But in a sign that her re-emergence into the public eye had struggled to galvanise her supporters, MPs said they agreed with her focus on boosting economic growth, but not necessarily her policies.

Senior members of the newly launched Conservative Growth Group were at pains to distance themselves from her brand, insisting it was not a caucus of “Trussketeers”.The return of Ms Truss had threatened to spark further infighting within the Tories, but there remain some misgivings among her supporters over how she approached her premiership.

“Things started to go wrong as early as August when the Chevening group were frozen out. The advisers closed ranks around her and policies, such as cutting the 45p rate, were devised,” the backbencher said.
