Centrists said the new deputy chairman would “turn off middle class Tory voters” and is seen as a “risk”, but others say he speaks to a “crucial type of voter” including those in the so-called Red Wall of ex-Labour, Brexit-voting seats. “So I think he’ll appeal to some members in some parts of the country, but, equally, he’ll turn as many members and as many potential voters off. As one of my colleagues put it: ‘if you want to turn off middle class Tory voters, appoint Lee Anderson.’”
“For them, when they see Lee doing his business they feel like someone like them with their views and values is finally being represented,” the MP said.Another praised Mr Anderson for speaking with “no filter” and coming from a different background to most MPs.
