What’s the current state of build-to-rent in Australia?
There’s no easy solution. They’re not going to fix this in two years. This is a five- to 10-year problem. We need China back. At the moment, if you’re a Chinese investor, there are so many other places around the world that want your money, and Australia is pushing the money away. Why would you come here?
Melbourne’s planning system is OK. It’s slow, but at least you can come through VCAT [Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal] and you can actually put a date in a program and a feasibility. Whereas, Sydney – it’s very, very difficult to do that.
