St Kilda coach Ross Lyon says star forward Tim Membrey is in “really good care, ongoing care” as the football community wraps its arms around him after he withdrew from Saturday’s elimination final due to a personal health matter.

Lyon said he got a phone call from the club doctor at 8.15am on Saturday alerting him to Membrey’s situation and then consulted Saints football manager David Misson and CEO Simon Lethlean to determine the process they would follow.“In this situation we really need to respect Tim and what he’s going through,” assistant coach Lenny Hayes told SEN pre-match.

“Once there’s an oil spill, [there’s a] media release, [you] communicate [it], and then there’s a lot of chatter with your group,” Lyon said. “Then if anyone doesn’t feel they’re up to the challenge [of playing], there’s an emergency Ryan Byrnes ready to go, because there’s some people close to the situation.
