Sure, headlines can be misleading. It is the fastest car on the planet. It just isn’t this planet.

for robotic vehicles here on earth, and why none had made it anywhere near the full 150 miles required.Leger let us try on the 3D glasses rover drivers use to assess terrain. It is amazing how much greater a sense of proportion, scale, and proximity is available with 3D than without—with two eyes instead of one."Your eyes are pretty good at figuring out how big something is," said Leger.

The rovers are operating on opposite sides of the planet. So theoretically, the two could meet and stage the first MartianThat would mean more than 3000 miles of driving, and despite the fact that each rover has outlived its expected 90-day life span by several months, they probably could not make it that far.

The first rover, Sojourner, just after landing on Mars, still sitting on its Pathfinder landing vehicle, with the airbags that protected it on impact, ready to roll."Why do guys have cars?" asked Ames Research Lab content developer Nick Veronico.Um, uhh...This is space researcher humor. Veronico travels the country demonstrating a replica of the Mars vehicle Sojourner, called a Personal Exploration Rover. This PER gives people an idea of what it's like to drive on Mars.

Seven years before the Opportunity and Spirit rovers touched down on the Martian surface, Sojourner—the name given the vehicle used in the Pathfinder mission—had already scooted about the Red Planet. The PER we drove is a simple simulation of that small vehicle. It is one of 50 PERs jointly developed by Carnegie Mellon University and NASA to get people interested in space. We caught up with it and with Veronico at the Wired Nextfest in San Francisco.
