Ah the dreaded school uniform run. It’s not fun for parents and it’s not fun for children. But what if we scrapped them to save millions of people money?
Local authorities and individual schools decide on school uniform policy at local level in Scotland. There is help available from councils, called a 'school clothing grant', worth at least £120 which is paid directly into parents' bank accounts. Research by the Children's Society from 2020 shows that, on average, UK parents spend £337 and £315 per year on uniforms for each child at secondary school or primary school, respectively. This means the current minimum school clothing grant doesn’t cover half of the average cost.
