Chris Gheysens, CEO of the beloved New Jersey convenience store chain Wawa, will be the keynote speaker at Rowan University's commencement ceremony on May 10th. This early announcement is atypical for New Jersey colleges but highlights the strong ties between Wawa and Rowan University, with a Wawa store located just a mile from the graduation venue.
A New Jersey university has chosen the head of one of the area's most iconic companies to serve as its speaker for this year's commencement ceremony. Wawa CEO Chris Gheysens will deliver the keynote address at Rowan University 's commencement on May 10 in Glassboro, according to school officials. This early selection is unusual. Most New Jersey colleges announce their speakers much closer to the commencement date.
For instance, in 2016, Rowan University announced its speaker just a few weeks before the event. Wawa, renowned for its hoagies, Sizzlis, and signature soft pretzels, has a store located less than a mile from Rowan University's Richard Wackar Stadium, the venue for this spring's commencement. Gheysens, a 27-year Wawa employee and a native of Vineland, has made other appearances at Rowan University, which is situated 25 miles from the company's headquarters. In 2022, he met with students at Rowan's William G. Rohrer College of Business, arriving on campus in a Wawa-branded vehicle. Rowan University, formerly known as Glassboro State College, has a rich history. It was renamed in 1996 in honor of a substantial donor. The university holds the distinction of hosting notable figures like President Lyndon Johnson, who spoke at its commencement in 1968. The choice of Gheysens as this year's commencement speaker reflects Rowan University's ongoing commitment to fostering connections with local businesses and leaders
