The University of Michigan has decided to terminate its long-standing partnership with Shanghai Jiao Tong University after pressure from a House GOP representative who raised concerns about national security. The decision comes following the arrest of five students from Shanghai Jiao Tong who were found trespassing at a military base.

The University of Michigan has decided to end its two-decade-long partnership with Shanghai Jiao Tong University following pressure from a Republican House Representative. Rep. John Moolenaar of Michigan sent a warning letter to the university in October on behalf of the House Select Committee on the Strategic Competition Between the United States and the Chinese Communist Party.

The letter cited the recent arrest of five students who had come to Michigan through the partnership and were charged with lying to investigators after being found trespassing at Camp Grayling, a military base. Moolenaar urged the university to terminate the partnership and safeguard the integrity of federally funded research, emphasizing the need to carefully vet international students. The University of Michigan acknowledged the letter and stated that it will be ending the program. President Santa Ono emphasized that while international academic partnerships have enriched the university's offerings, national security also needs to be prioritized. The university clarified that it remains committed to offering international experiences for its students and will continue to recruit students globally. Ono stressed the importance of international experiences for students in today's interconnected world and the university's dedication to supporting international students and fostering partnerships that promote knowledge, cross-cultural understanding, and a vibrant campus community. Rep. Moolenaar celebrated the decision and urged other U.S. universities to follow suit, highlighting the need to protect national security research from collaboration with Chinese Communist Party researchers in critical technologies. This move follows similar actions by other universities, such as Georgia Tech, which ended its partnership with Tianjin University due to the latter's inclusion on the U.S. Department of Commerce's Entity List for allegedly stealing American military technology
