Huge waves are expected to create dangerous conditions at Bay Area beaches on Monday.
Mike Moffitt / SFGATEBay Area beaches on Monday, and the National Weather Service is warning to,"Never turn your back to the ocean."
"There is a northwest swell that is coming in ahead of [Tuesday's] cold front," said Dalton Behringer, a forecaster with the weather service. There's an increased risk for sneaker waves, which are much larger and run farther up the beach than other waves in a set. Sneaker waves can catch people on the beach by surprise and pull them into the ocean."There can be an interval up to 30 minutes between large waves," Behringer said.
The weather service issued a beach hazard statement in effect Monday through 11 p.m. and asked beach-goers to keep their eyes on their children and pets. All beaches are of concern, but Behringer the most dangerous conditions are likely at northwest-facing beaches such as Pacifica State Beach.
